Does Tutoring Make a Difference?

A question we hear often from our clients is, “Does tutoring make a difference?”

According to the National Bureau of Academic Research, tutoring is “one of the most versatile and potentially transformative educational tools in use today.” In our own experience at Total College Prep, we’ve seen students who have been struggling with reading comprehension, textual analysis, physics, chemistry, biology, history, AP studies, economics, algebra, precalc, calculus, statistics, geometry, and geography conquer their challenges and excel in exemplary measure.

Thanks to a wide range of experiments on K – 12 students, we have concrete evidence that “tutoring programs yield consistent and substantial positive impacts on learning outcomes, with an overall pooled effect size estimate of 0.37 SD.”

The factors that most affect the level of success students see due to tutoring are the following:

  • Professional and paraprofessional programs rather than parent or amateur tutoring
  • The teacher’s familiarity with and understanding of the curriculum used for each grade level and subject
  • The student’s relationship with and trust in their tutor(s)
  • Consistent intervention as early as possible

We take pride in the knowledge base and personability of every team member at Total College Prep. Statistics show us that students who enroll in a tutoring program in high school, whether specifically targeted at test-taking or a specific subject, do better when their tutor is someone warm and personable yet firm and knowledgeable.

Additionally, it’s our experience that the earlier a student begins tutoring or SAT/ACT prep, the better. Of course, it’s never too late, but in our experience, the sooner test prep/tutoring is started, the higher a student’s chances of college acceptance and success.
